What is lazyjira?

lazyjira is a keyboard-driven terminal UI for Jira, built in the style of lazygit and written in Go. Four panels show your issues, your projects, the selected issue and its status side by side, with vim-style navigation and mouse support. Search with JQL, then change an issue's transition, priority, assignee or labels, add comments, edit the description in your $EDITOR or create a new issue without opening a browser. It works with Jira Cloud and Jira Server/Data Center, and the first run walks you through the connection with a setup wizard. The package and the command are both called lazyjira.

🚀 Why Latest Versions Matter: lazyjira is young and moves quickly, with new editing actions, Jira field support and configuration options landing release after release. It is not in the Debian or Ubuntu archives at all, and upstream publishes release binaries on GitHub but no apt repository, so a binary copied by hand into your PATH never updates itself.

⚡ Key Features of lazyjira

🔍 JQL Search

Type JQL with autocomplete and syntax highlighting, and come back to earlier queries through a persistent history. Saved JQL tabs keep the views you use every day one key away.

🗂️ Four-Panel Layout

Issues, projects, issue detail and status sit side by side, or stacked on a narrow terminal. Navigate with vim-style keys or the mouse.

✏️ Inline Editing

Change transitions, priority, assignee and labels, add comments, and edit descriptions in your $EDITOR. New issues are created from the same screen.

🌿 Git Integration

Create a git branch from the selected issue, or open the issue that belongs to the branch you are on, so the ticket and the code stay matched.

⚙️ Configurable

Keybindings, JQL tabs, issue columns and custom fields are all set in ~/.config/lazyjira/, with the default ANSI theme or one of the Catppuccin themes.

🔐 Cloud and Server

Jira Cloud signs in with an email and API token, Jira Server and Data Center with a personal access token, and mTLS client certificates are supported.

🚀 Always ahead of the official archives: Debian and Ubuntu freeze package versions when a release ships. This repository publishes new upstream releases typically within hours. A simple apt upgrade keeps you on the latest version.

📦 Installation from deb.griffo.io

Run the commands

Step 1: Add Repository

sudo install -d -m 0755 /etc/apt/keyrings
curl -fsSL https://deb.griffo.io/EA0F721D231FDD3A0A17B9AC7808B4DD62C41256.asc | sudo gpg --dearmor --yes -o /etc/apt/keyrings/deb.griffo.io.gpg
echo "deb [signed-by=/etc/apt/keyrings/deb.griffo.io.gpg] https://deb.griffo.io/apt $(lsb_release -sc 2>/dev/null) main" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/deb.griffo.io.list > /dev/null
sudo apt update
install -d -m 0755 /etc/apt/keyrings
curl -fsSL https://deb.griffo.io/EA0F721D231FDD3A0A17B9AC7808B4DD62C41256.asc | gpg --dearmor --yes -o /etc/apt/keyrings/deb.griffo.io.gpg
echo "deb [signed-by=/etc/apt/keyrings/deb.griffo.io.gpg] https://deb.griffo.io/apt $(lsb_release -sc 2>/dev/null) main" | tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/deb.griffo.io.list > /dev/null
apt update
sudo apt install extrepo
sudo extrepo enable griffo
sudo apt update

🆓 There is an always-free mirror. deb-free.griffo.io serves packages free forever, no account, no subscription, at most 2 months behind upstream, security fixes immediately. It currently carries cliamp, Ghostty, lazydocker, Oh My Posh, Uncloud and Zed; lazyjira is not one of them, so the repository above is the only way to get it today, ask and it can be enrolled.

How the free mirror works →

🧩 About the extrepo option. extrepo is Debian's own tool for external repositories: it writes the sources file and installs the signing key for you, checking the key against signed metadata first. This repository is registered with it as griffo, and the always-free mirror as griffo-free, so on Debian (bookworm, trixie, forky and sid) the commands above are the whole setup.

extrepo sets up the sources file and the key only, so a subscription's credentials still go in /etc/apt/auth.conf.d/deb.griffo.io.conf. Ubuntu is not covered, because extrepo publishes metadata for Debian suites only: there, use the sudo or root commands.

Step 2: Install lazyjira

# Install latest lazyjira
sudo apt install lazyjira

# Verify installation
lazyjira --version
# Install latest lazyjira
apt install lazyjira

# Verify installation
lazyjira --version

Step 3: Connect to Jira

# The first run opens a setup wizard for your Jira connection
lazyjira

# Or set up and remove credentials directly
lazyjira auth
lazyjira logout

🎯 Basic Usage Examples

Trying it without writing anything:

# Dry run: work against your real Jira, but make no changes
lazyjira --dry-run

# Write a log file while you use it
lazyjira --log /tmp/lazyjira.log

Working from a git repository:

# Start lazyjira inside the repository you work in, so branches
# created from issues land there and the current branch maps to its issue
cd ~/src/my-service
lazyjira

Editing descriptions in your own editor:

# Descriptions open in $EDITOR
export EDITOR=nvim
lazyjira

Configuration and optional helpers:

# Keybindings, JQL tabs, columns, custom fields and theme live here
ls ~/.config/lazyjira/

# Suggested packages: git for branches, xclip to copy to the clipboard,
# xdg-utils to open issues in the browser
sudo apt install git xclip xdg-utils

# The changelog and the Config, Keybindings and Custom Fields docs
ls /usr/share/doc/lazyjira
# Keybindings, JQL tabs, columns, custom fields and theme live here
ls ~/.config/lazyjira/

# Suggested packages: git for branches, xclip to copy to the clipboard,
# xdg-utils to open issues in the browser
apt install git xclip xdg-utils

# The changelog and the Config, Keybindings and Custom Fields docs
ls /usr/share/doc/lazyjira

🔧 Tool Integrations

lazyjira fits into an existing terminal workflow:

  • Git: create a branch from the selected issue, or jump to the issue behind the branch you are on
  • Editor: descriptions open in $EDITOR, so Neovim, Helix or any other editor does the writing
  • Browser: open the selected issue in your browser through xdg-open when you need the full Jira web view
  • Clipboard: copy with xclip, ready to paste into a commit message or a chat
  • Corporate Jira: personal access tokens and mTLS client certificates cover Server and Data Center installs behind stricter setups

🚀 Why Choose deb.griffo.io?

📊 Repository Comparison:
  • Official Debian: not packaged: lazyjira is not in any Debian release, from Bookworm to Sid
  • Upstream binary: current on the day you download it, but upstream publishes release binaries on GitHub with no apt repository, so apt upgrade never sees a new version and every release is another manual download
  • Building with go install: needs a Go toolchain and a rebuild on every upgrade, and leaves out the changelog and documentation
  • deb.griffo.io: latest version with automatic updates

🎯 Perfect for: developers who live in the terminal and would rather not open Jira in a browser, triaging and updating issues from the keyboard, keeping git branches in step with issue keys, and trying a Jira client safely with a dry run before it writes anything.
